Macy’s Great Tree Lighting
After gorging themselves on Thanksgiving dinners and then napping on the couch during some football, it’s an Atlanta family tradition to head down to Buckhead’s Lenox Square Mall for the Lighting of the Great Tree. Since 1948, then Rich’s, now Macy’s, has donned a giant decorated pine tree on top as an essential part of the Atlanta’s holiday season. Every year, on Thanksgiving evening from 7-8pm, the tree is ceremoniously lit. In recent years the Lighting of the Great Tree has become a family event complete with a bell choir and Christmas carols performed by local celebrities. The tree is illuminated during the high note of “O Holy Night” and followed up by a fireworks show. The tree remains lit from Thanksgiving night through New Year’s Eve, so even if you can’t make it down to Buckhead on Thanksgiving, there’s plenty of opportunity to see the majestic tree throughout the holiday season.
Check up on the progress of choosing, erecting, decorating and otherwise preparing for the lighting at the Lenox Square Mall website at http://www.simon.com/Mall/?id=207.
The Return of the Pink Pig
It’s not a Hollywood blockbuster super-hero sequel, but it is a good time and an Atlanta family tradition. On a recent shopping trip to Buckhead’s Lenox Square Mall, I saw that part of the Lenox Road parking deck has been partitioned off to make space for the Pink Pig. Since 2004, the Pink Pig, a small amusement park type ride for children, has appeared seasonally at Lenox Square, but for long-time Atlanta residents, this yearly tradition brings back memories of the original Pink Pig, located in the old Rich’s building in downtown Atlanta starting in 1953. Originally a monorail ride that circled around Rich’s great tree and flew over the toy department, families from all over the metro Atlanta area would make the yearly pilgrimage to ride the pink, named Pricilla.
Although the ride no longer leaves the ground and instead just circles around a parking garage, kids still line up to take the ride every year and it makes for a great break in a day of holiday shopping. One of our favorite holiday home tours in Atlanta is the Downtown Decatur Candlelight Tour of Homes. Tour some of Decatur’s finest Craftsman bungalows, English Tudors and turn of the century homes when they are decked out in their holiday finest! It’s also a great way to get some new ideas for your holiday decor this year. The Tour of Homes will run from Friday, November 30 to Saturday, December 1 from 5:30-9:30 pm. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door and all proceeds will benefit nonprofit organizations in the City of Decatur.
To get a sneak preview of the Decatur homes that will be on the holiday Tour of Homes, check the official 2012 Decatur Holiday Candlelight Tour of Homes website. They haven’t posted any detailed information yet, but it should be available in the next week or two.
St. Regis Holiday Teas
If you’re not looking forward to standing in the mall Santa line this season so that your kids can place their orders with Jolly Ol’ Saint Nick, there is another option. The St. Regis Hotel, one of Buckhead’s most elegant hotels, offers a bit more refined meeting with the Clauses. Starting on November 30, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be having tea in the elegant Astor Court and are now booking intimate meetings where your family can have some quality time with the very busy Father Christmas.
Tea with Santa is offered Thursday through Sunday from 2-5pm, November 30th through December 9th and daily from December 13-24. Spots tend to book up fast and a reservation is required, so visit the St. Regis website at http://www.stregisatlanta.com/Holiday-Tea for more information on reserving a Children’s Tea with Santa or the other adult holiday tea’s offered during the season, including a special fashioned-inspired Black Friday Tea.
West Midtown is one of the newest hippest neighborhoods in Atlanta, centered around the Westside Provisions District which is home to some of Atlanta’s trendiest shopping and dining including great stores like Room & Board, Jonathan Adler, Seed Factory and Star Provisions and restaurants like Bacchanalia and West Egg.
For the first time this year, Santa will be visiting the Westside Provisions District on Saturday, December 8 and 15, accompanied by his lovely wife, Mrs. Claus. There will be a stocking bar with lots of unique items for you to use to stuff the stockings of everyone on your list. Noteworthy, the University of Georgia’s vocal ensemble, will be there to stuff your ears with Christmas carols as well. The fun starts at 11 a.m. and lasts until 4 p.m. It’s a great opportunity to get in the spirit and to some hip holiday shopping. For more info on Tinsel & Twine, check out the district’s website at http://westsidepd.com/
Holidays in the Garden
The Atlanta Botanical Gardens is bringing one of Atlanta’s favorite holiday traditions back… and it is going to be bigger, better and brighter than even! For the 2012 event, they will be adding even more lights as you sing with holiday carolers, roast s’mores over a fire, or enjoy a hot toddy at the Glow Bar or a cozy dinner at MetroFresh in the Garden.
