Drew Charter School is the 2012 Georgia Charter School of the Year
It is one of the state’s highest performing elementary/middle schools and continue educational excellence, they will receive a $50,000 grant from The Coca-Cola Foundation.
The competition was tough this year and the three charter school finalists were:
- Brighten Academy in Douglasville, GA
- KIPP South Fulton Academy in Fulton County
- International Community School in DeKalb County
The primary criteria for the winner of the Georgia Charter School of the Year included being in existence for at least five years and demonstrating academic excellence.

Charles R. Drew Charter was the City of Atlanta’s first charter school. It opened it’s doors in 2000, thanks to the East Lake Foundation, the Atlanta Board of Education, and parents in the community of East Lake. Drew Charter School serves neighborhoods in the City of Atlanta school system, but gives enrollment priority to East Lake residents.
